Informally we call these web pages phlogs, for photo log; a photograph with either a long caption or a short essay, call it either way. I wish I had a photograph to match this New Yorker cartoon; I’ll keep my eyes open, but it won’t be possible to match this simple sketch. If there’s an overall title for this series of phlogs it would have to be “There are no Easy Answers.” I like the acronym, Tanea; a name one might choose for a 21st century hippy-child, a curly haired girl. There ain’t no answer. There ain’t going to be any answer. There never has been an answer. That’s the answer. Gertrude Stein “The truth, plain and simple, The plain unvarnished truth;” plain means clear, evident, obvious, simple and free of ambiguity, quite the contrast to Tanea. I would like to acknowledge some who have come into my life from the right side of this frame: Hugh Coryell, 5th grade teacher, Wanda Grey, educator, Hans Bethe, Sheriff Bob Braudis, Hunter Thompson and R.P. Feynman, who noted that, “What is not surrounded by uncertainty cannot be the truth.” Despite the evidence they showed me from that other side, I still want to go there.
