Home: the place where one’s domestic affections are centered.

“Home is a place not only of strong affections, but of entire unreserve; its life’s undress rehearsal, its backroom, its dressing room, from which we go forth to more careful and guarded intercourse.” Harriet Beecher Stowe

This is a big old one, before central heating, with many fireplaces and requiring servants. Then, as now, a man is the lord of his castle and what goes on in the home is “private” and none of our business until extraordinary. And then as now, if a man’s unreserve be harsh, ungentle and unpleasant, then so be it; that will be the character of the home. The secrets are confined to inside where they hide behind doors and curtains, under cupboards and in the ashes of many dead fires.

“It is part of morality not be at home in one’s home.” Theodor Adomo
